Every child needs a safe, nourishing, and stimulating environment in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically and socially. As educators, it is our responsibility to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by creating a learning climate that is comfortable, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. This is the mission of Roslyn’s Office of Curriculum and Instruction.
Curriculum involves the interests of the children and makes learning relevant to the students’ lives. Teachers deliver instruction in many ways. It is important to incorporate integrated units, projects, group work, individual work, and hands-on learning in order to make children active learners. A very important piece to all of this is creating a community of learners that allows for children to become caring and active members of society.
In Roslyn, we embrace high standards of instructional excellence and academic rigor, defined according to 21st-century criteria. We embrace new ideas that further our community’s educational vision, while retaining those practices that have been proven to be effective through the years. We are pleased to support many programs and new initiatives, including those highlighted here:
Roslyn’s commitment to nurturing every child is manifested in a range of programs and services that meet the needs of the most challenged to the most gifted students. Support is provided from specialists in math, reading, computers, library services, psychologists, nurses, guidance counselors, social workers, and special education teachers and paraprofessionals.
Social and emotional learning, centered at the Roslyn Middle School, engages the entire student body in curriculum-related projects that develop young people’s emerging awareness of their relationship with others and their engagement with the wider world.
To develop the entire range of human potential, Roslyn has long-established programs in vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, drama, numerous co-curricular clubs and activities, and a wide range of competitive athletics.
Nearly 20 Advanced Placement courses and a comprehensive Research Program are among the opportunities available to students who wish to challenge themselves beyond the rigors of the regular academic program. As a result, many hundreds of Roslyn High School students sit for AP exams each year, while many participate and frequently excel in the most competitive research programs in the nation.
Professional development goes hand-in-hand with curriculum development. In-service education, conferences and district-wide professional development days for all staff are among the opportunities provided to ensure that instruction adheres to the highest professional standards and stays abreast of current research.
The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project has enhanced the teaching of literacy in our elementary schools, and has recently been introduced into the middle school. The project is a research and staff development organization at Teachers College, Columbia University, whose teacher-educators develop long-lasting collaborations with teachers across the world, including in Roslyn.
Preparing students for an increasingly digital world demands a comprehensive commitment to making technology an integral part of the learning experience. A recent initiative, for example, has put iPads into the hands of every high school student. The program greatly facilitates student-teacher communication, lowers the cost of purchasing texts, and also teaches environmental responsibility by saving enormous amounts of paper.
The culmination of all of these and many other efforts in the area of curriculum and instruction is that Roslyn's High School has a nearly 100 percent rate of graduation, and almost all graduates pursue higher education.

The Department of Education in Washington, DC has allocated funds through the New York State Education Department to the Roslyn UFSD. These funds support the Title I-A, Title II-A, Title III-ELL, and Title IV-A Programs. The Roslyn UFSD is submitting an application to utilize these funds for the specific purposes and intentions that correspond to each program.
