Roslyn Middle School Stock Market Team
Wins Big
A team of Roslyn Middle School eighth graders in Biz LIFE 8 class have won first place in The Stock Market Game. The winning student team — led by teacher Audrey Demas — placed 1st among 387 teams in the region and 30th out of 3,918 teams in New York State. The team includes students George Lampropoulos, Matthew Lee, Brian Samers, and Damien Schmidt.
The game ran from October 5, 2020 through December 11, 2020, with each team beginning with a virtual $100,000 to invest in NYSE and NASDAQ stocks. The Roslyn team earned $33,281.24 on their investments, with top holdings that included Tesla, Inc., Apple Inc., Nike Inc., Walt Disney Co., Walmart Inc., and Target Corp.
“This is tremendous!” said Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Michael Goldspiel. “It was our first year offering this new course, with a curriculum created and written by our own Roslyn teachers. I am very proud!”
"Working with these students was inspiring,” said Roslyn Middle School teacher Audrey Demas. “They used what they learned in class and had great insight into their chosen companies. I commend them for their admirable ability to work cooperatively in decision making. I'm so proud of each one of them!"
The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students grades 4-12 in the world of economics, investing, and personal finance.
