Roslyn BOE Appoints New Principals for RHS & RMS

The Roslyn School District is pleased to announce the appointment of two exceptional educational leaders to serve as the next principals of Roslyn High School and Roslyn Middle School. Following a comprehensive and rigorous selection process, the Roslyn Board of Education (BOE) unanimously approved the appointments of Dr. Dave Lazarus and Mr. Justin Gabrus at the May 8, 2025, BOE meeting.

Dr. Dave Lazarus, current assistant principal at Roslyn High School, will become the new principal. Justin Gabrus, current assistant principal at Roslyn Middle School, will step into the role of middle school principal. Both will assume full responsibilities when Principal Scott Andrews and Principal Craig Johanson retire later this year.

Dr. Lazarus brings two decades of experience in education, with a strong background in school administration and instructional leadership. He holds advanced degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (Ed.D.), SUNY New Paltz, Teachers College at Columbia University, and SUNY Stony Brook. Throughout his career, Dr. Lazarus has held key leadership roles at both the high school and middle school levels, overseeing hiring and evaluation, developing master schedules, leading curriculum initiatives, and advancing student support systems. He is certified in School Building and District Leadership and is widely respected for his commitment to academic excellence and inclusive school culture.

Mr. Gabrus is a highly credentialed and experienced leader in education, holding professional certifications in School Building and District Leadership, Childhood Education, and Literacy. He earned his degrees from The College of Saint Rose, Touro College, and SUNY Old Westbury. In his current role, Mr. Gabrus oversees grades 6 and 8, chairs the Art Department and Child Study Committee, and coordinates all state and school-wide assessments. He also plays a vital role in emergency preparedness as a member of the Behavioral Threat Assessment Team and works closely with Homeland Security. Additionally, Mr. Gabrus co-chairs the Shared Decision Making Committee and leads family engagement initiatives through the Parent-Faculty Association (PFA).

“These appointments are the result of an extensive selection process involving multiple interviews, community and staff feedback, and a close evaluation of each candidate’s experience and vision,” said Superintendent Allison Brown. “Dr. Lazarus and Mr. Gabrus rose to the top because of their dedication, expertise, and deep commitment to student success. Both leaders have a strong understanding of the Roslyn school culture and traditions, and I am confident they will continue to foster excellence while bringing fresh ideas to our learning community.”

The Roslyn School District congratulates Dr. Lazarus and Mr. Gabrus on their new roles and looks forward to their continued leadership and contributions.
