Harbor Hill 5th Graders Engage in Election Lessons

Fifth-graders at Harbor Hill Elementary School have been learning about the election process in anticipation of this year's presidential election. The lessons have included topics such as: qualities of a great leader, how Americans vote, the role of the president, and the Electoral College system. They also learned what it means to be a helpful citizen and how children can make their voices heard, even if they can't vote yet.

Students played an Electoral College partner game, one of many activities designed to excite and include them in the process. Each partner rolled a die, and whoever had the higher number got to choose a state to "win." The winner was whichever partner reached 270 electoral votes.

“The students have been incredibly engaged in every lesson, discussion, and read-aloud related to the election,” said their teacher Ms. Schwartz. “They have been respectful, inquisitive, and insightful, and have thoroughly enjoyed learning about this important moment in our country's history.”
