First Place for RHS Mock Trial Team
The Roslyn High School mock trial team placed first at the 39th Annual Robert I. Bernstein SWS Mock Trial Tournament. The event took place on November 29, 2023, at Wheatley High School.
The competition consisted of simulated trials with a fictional case concerning cyberstalking. Members of the team took on the roles of witnesses and lawyers, splitting into defense and prosecution. The trials were analogous to those of real court cases with a judge presiding each round. Members wrote crosses, directs, openings, and summations, creating their own complete case for the competition.
After going against Wheatley and Great Neck South in the first two rounds, both the defense and the prosecution won. Finally, in the last round of the tournament, Roslyn's defense went against a Wheatley prosecution team, ultimately winning the trial and the tournament.
“I am really proud of the job that our witnesses and lawyers did, as well as our captains who were instrumental in preparing them,” said teacher and advisor Cathy Elorriaga. “ I also want to thank our lawyer advisor, Lisa Rossi, who for the past several years has done such an amazing job of teaching our students how to prepare for a case. Our team hopes to continue this winning streak for states."
The Roslyn High School Mock Trial team members include: Co-captain’s Jordan Kaplan, Eli Klein, and Jacob Silverman; Sheilly Benlevi, Mitchell Berger, Sasha Berman, Matthew Clarke, Benjamin Davidson, Sam Greenfield, Emily Krejci, Tanishka Kumar, Zachary Mashaal, Nathaniel Rubin, Rebecca Peykar, Tori Siegel, Liat Somekh, Dana Wang, Micah Zarin, and Albert Zheng.
