12 RHS Students Earn Awards at LISEF

Twelve Roslyn High School students won awards at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF)—held March 13, 2025 at Crest Hollow Country Club. LISEF is a competition for the most advanced high school projects and gives students the opportunity to present to professionals in their subject areas from local universities, scientific institutions, and professionals in the field.

Six students won awards at the senior fair, including Mahin Gupta (2nd Place in Translational Medicine), Tessla Chan (3rd Place in Computational Biology) Serin Jo (3rd Place in Chemistry), Sarah Fernbach (3rd Place in Behavioral Science), Elizabeth Hsiao (Honorable Mention in Microbiology), and Ava Ramsey (Honorable Mention in Behavioral Science). To qualify for the senior division, students submitted 7-minute video presentations, with the top 25% advancing to the in-person round. At the fair, all participants presented boards and took part in 3-5 interviews with judges.

Six students in the junior division won awards, including Matthew Lin (1st Place in Chemistry), Sarah Kruger (2nd Place in Animal Science), Hua Lin (2nd Place Honors in Math and Computer Science), Safiya Bhuiyan (3rd Place in Math and Computer Science), Mingyao Xu (3rd Place in Cell Biology), and Michaela Mallin (Honorable Mention in Math and Computer Science).

"It was wonderful to see so many of our students performing at this level and interacting with professionals in their fields," said Dr. Allyson Weseley, who runs the high school research program. "These fairs not only help students develop their scientific thinking but also invaluable communication skills."
