2025 LI Junior Science and Humanities Symposium

Five Roslyn High School students —  seniors Riley Lenson and Justin Margulies, and juniors Noa Karp, Hua Lin and Matthew Lin, were invited to present their research at the semifinal round of the annual Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS), held at York College in Jamaica Queens on Sunday, February 9, 2025.

JSHS invites high school students to report on the results of their original research investigations in STEM and compete for scholarships and recognition at university-held regional symposia.

Riley examined how posting photographs showcasing a political candidate’s personal life influenced male and female candidates differently. Her work was done under the supervision of Dr. Allyson Weseley, the district’s Coordinator of Secondary Research. Justin’s project focused on cloud computing and how to develop more efficient systems. Noa worked in a wet lab on a project aimed at examining immune tolerance through Treg modulation and immune priming. Hua worked remotely with a mentor in China to use machine learning to improve the performance of hearing aids. Matthew’s chemistry project focused on how to limit silica scales that impede the performance of water filtration devices.

“It was a pleasure to watch our students present,” said Dr. Weseley. “In addition to exposing our students to cutting edge work in so many STEM-related fields, our research program prepares students to speak confidently and communicate effectively.”
