RMS Seventh Graders Take Science for a Spin

Seventh-grade science students at Roslyn Middle School put engineering principles into action during the school’s annual Paper Roller Coaster Carnival, an engaging, hands-on showcase of creativity and scientific understanding.

Working collaboratively in small groups, students designed and constructed elaborate paper roller coasters, each uniquely themed and engineered to demonstrate the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy. Dozens of coasters were displayed throughout the carnival, highlighting both technical skill and imaginative design.

The annual project challenges students to apply core physics concepts while strengthening problem-solving, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills. Through iterative testing and refinement, students learned how scientific theory translates into real-world application.

The award for Most Thrilling, “Nitro/Curly Fry,” went to Gal Vainer, Lucas Chen and Logan Cymbler.

Most Likely to Appear in an Amusement Park, “Tangle Twister,” was awarded to Emily Mun, Catherine Ouyang and Evelyn Yang.

The Most Creative award, “Dusky Dragon,” went to Audra Koestner, Carissa Dong, Lexi Chen and April Long.

Now in its sixth year, the Paper Roller Coaster Carnival has become a signature Roslyn Middle School tradition—celebrating academic excellence, innovation, and a passion for learning that extends beyond the classroom.
