Closing and Delayed Opening Guidelines

In the case of inclement weather, (or other unforeseen emergencies) the Roslyn School District will exercise good judgment to determine whether schools will transition to remote instruction or a full closure. The information below details the school district’s approach to school closings, delays, remote instruction and early dismissals.

Schools Closed

The first snow day of the school year will most likely result in a complete shutdown of the district, as we believe it’s important to continue the tradition of a snow day. No after-school activities will occur on days when schools are closed. The decision to cancel school may occur the night before a storm, or in the early morning, based on the weather forecast.

Delayed Opening (Two-Hour Delay)

The district may determine that school can open with a two-hour delay, based on road conditions. See chart below for delayed start times. Students who use school bus transportation should be at their assigned bus stop two hours later than normal. Students who walk should plan to arrive at their school two hours later than the normal arrival time. 
Students will be dismissed at their regular dismissal time at the end of the day.

Delayed Remote Opening (Two-Hour Delay)

The district will go remote with a two-hour delayed opening, as long as the area isn’t experiencing a loss of power. (see chart above for two-hour delayed start times).  Remote days allow us to preserve the school year calendar as planned, but the calendar is always subject to change in case of emergency.

Emergency Early Dismissal

Dismissal time is determined based on inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances and is communicated to families as soon as possible. No after school activities occur on early dismissal days.

Snow Closing Notifications

Roslyn School District will send notifications to all staff and parents/guardians regarding school closings and delays via email, text, phone, and our ParentSquare mobile app. Every school district family is automatically signed up to receive these notifications via our Powerschool platform. It is very important that families keep their information current in the system. Click here to verify or update your information. 

Website - A pop-up notification will appear on the Roslyn School District website, notifying the school community of any school closings or delays.
Local Media - Snow closings and delays are communicated to local media including: News 12 Long Island.

SCOPE Unscheduled Emergency Closing Policies & Procedures 

  • If the school district announces an emergency school closing, the SCOPE Child Care Program will be CLOSED.
  • If the school district announces an unscheduled emergency early dismissal the SCOPE After School program may be CANCELLED OR CLOSE EARLY.
  • If the school district announces a CANCELLATION OF AFTER-SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, the SCOPE After School Program MAY BE CANCELLED OR CLOSE EARLY.

SCOPE will activate a Connect Ed message to each parent/guardian home, work and cell phone numbers with information on the status of the program. It is the parent/guardian responsibility to make necessary arrangements in the event SCOPE is cancelled.
