ESSA/SLFS Report

Transparency Reporting and ESSA Reporting
In 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) established federal financial transparency reporting requirements to ensure accountability in education funding and to promote equitable resource allocation. Beginning in Fall 2024, data collection of school year 2023-2024 expenditures for the ESSA Financial Transparency Report was combined with data collection for the newly mandated School Level Finance Survey (SLFS). The combined report aims to show how much each school spends per student and where the funding originates, enabling districts to evaluate resource allocation and identify areas for improvement.. Also, this data is used to ensure equitable resource allocation and inform policy decisions. The reports combine federal, state, and local funding information at the school level for the preceding fiscal year.
This data will be utilized to satisfy both federally mandated school-level financial reporting requirements.
In New York, school districts typically submit their prior year’s expenditure data by December 31. The state then compiles the data and releases the report in the spring.
