This is the team's third conference championship in four years.

Lipari Caps an Extraordinary Season with Sixth-Place Finish
in National Championships

Sophomore Emily Lipari finished sixth in a field of the nation's best high school runners in the national cross country championships in San Diego on December 8. This latest triumph capped an extraordinary season in which she won the county, state and Federation Meet championships.

In the national championship race, Emily bested her time in the northeast regionals by two seconds and ran the fastest time of any tenth-grader in the race. She qualified for the national cross country championships with a sixth-place finish in the northeast regionals in the Bronx on November 24. Her time in that race was just 11 seconds behind the first-place finisher in a field of 116 of the top runners from a dozen northeastern states.

At the State Federation meet at Wappingers Falls on November 17, Emily posted the 4th fastest time ever in the 5K at this event. The Federation Meet brings together the best track performers from all of the public and private high schools in the state. That victory came a week after winning the state championships with the fastest time of any girl in New York this year, and two weeks after winning handily at the Nassau County championships.

Senior Thomas Lipari, Emily's brother, also qualified for the New York State Championships and ran his best time ever in the 5K while finishing 17th in the state on November 10. It was the first time that Roslyn had sent a brother and sister to the state cross country championships in the same year.

In the Nassau County championships, Emily won by a margin of more than 100 meters over her nearest competitor. Coach Vera Trenchfield said, "She is an exceptional athlete. She's gifted."

David Seinfeld, a member of the Roslyn Board of Education, offered this first-hand account of Emily's victory at the county championships: "I happened to be at the Cross Country County Championships with my son. The 5K is a 20-minute or so race for the strongest runners. The first two minutes the kids run across the field and into the woods; they come out about 15 minutes later and they run the last 1000 meters around the polo field. It's cool to see who comes out of the woods first — usually trailed by other runners a few steps behind. As I stood next to Mrs. Lipari, I saw Emily come out of the woods first; that wasn't a big surprise as she had the best time in the conference championships the week before. What was truly incredible is that we waited more than minute before the next runner exited the woods. People were awe-struck, even those hardened track coaches. As Emily turned for home the second runner — a girl from North Shore who has battled Emily for a number of years (they are in the same grade) — came out of the woods. Emily's time of 18:21 the previous week was the fastest in the county in any conference championship race. As she came down the front stretch, those hardened coaches started asking: "Can she beat 18 minutes?" Emily passed me with about 100 yards to the finish in full stride as strong as she started and crossed the line 40 seconds faster than her county best time from the week before, with an eye-popping time of 17:41. The North Shore student finished a strong second at 18:52."

MRSA Tips Staph Infection Prompts Precautions
RENEWED EMPHASIS ON PERSONAL HYGIENE

Like other schools throughout the region, Roslyn is taking steps to inform and educate student athletes about the spread of a potentially life-threatening staph infection and to focus on personal hygiene and sanitary conditions in the schools.
Newsday's story from October 19 about the infection describes efforts being made in Long Island schools to prevent the spread of infection, and contains a number of helpful links.

To prevent the spread of infection, the Centers for Disease Control recommends the practice of good hygiene:
  • Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
  • Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
  • Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors.

You will find more information in the MRSA Fact Sheet and Student Guide for Control and Prevention from the New York State Department of Health.

Read Dr. Richman's letter to parents, staff and students about the district's response to MRSA.

Preparing Your Child For Roslyn Athletics

    MEDICAL INFORMATION

We encourage parents to facilitate their children's participation in Roslyn Athletics by checking that all necessary medical and school documentation has been submitted to our school nurse.

If your child did not take the free, in-school athletic physical examinations, please be sure that your private physician uses the school form, which is good for all athletic seasons of the school year. This form is available from the school nurse or school building main office.

All student-athletes also need an athletic consent card annually, to be completed by their parent. This form is available from the attendance office or the athletic offices.

In addition, New York State regulations require that a "medical update" be filled out seasonally by the parent. This form is available by clicking here or from the attendance office at the high school or middle school. Please return all paperwork in a timely manner so that it can be processed and your child's sport season will not need to be delayed.

In review, here is simplified checklist:

To be submitted to the school nurse:
    Athletic Physical

  • Medical Update Form is necessary for each athletic season. This form is available by clicking here.
  • Vision Clearance Form (if applicable) (If your child's vision screens at 20/200 or worse, a vision clearance form is also required for contact sports.) This form is available by clicking here.

To be submitted to athletic director or coach:
    Parent consent card (blue)

High School students are welcome to go to either the high school or middle school on scheduled physical examinations dates if they need an exam in preparation for athletics during the school year. School exams are free, fast, and the easiest, most expedient way for parents to assure that their children will be ready for all seasonal tryouts.

If you have questions regarding your child's medical documents for athletics, please call Mrs. Safford at 625-6355 (HS) or Mrs. Collins at 625-6415 (MS). If you require additional information regarding the athletic seasons or procedures, please call Dr. Martincich at 625-6317.

We encourage your child's participation in our athletic programs, and thank you for your cooperation in preparing him/her for these activities.

Attendance Standards for Roslyn High School Athletes

It is our expectation that Roslyn High School athletes will maintain excellent attendance at all practices and games that are scheduled during their athletic seasons. A sense of commitment and responsibility are vital ingredients for personal and team success.

  • Legal absences from athletic practices or contests will be defined the same way that they are for school absences: school-sponsored trips and activities, days of religious observance, days of suspension from school and court appearance dates. Students may return to athletic practices/contests when they return to school after a legal absence.

  • Absences from school will not be considered "cuts" from practices or contests. They carry no consequences in terms of playing time.

  • "Special case" absences may include death or serious illness in the families of athletes. Communications received from parents/athletes and given to coaches will be shared with the Athletic Director and the consequences for these absences, if any, shall be determined by the Director.

  • Students who miss practices or contests due to illegal absences will not be removed from teams. However, the following minimum consequences will apply to all illegal absences whether these practices are on school days or school vacations:
    (1) For every single contest missed, the athlete will be "benched" for the next regularly-scheduled contest;
    (2) For every two practices missed, the athlete will be "benched" for the next regularly-scheduled contest.
  • The consequences for missed practices or contests will be the same for all high school athletes on any sport at any level.

  • After the consequences are served, the return of individual athletes to regular playing time or "starting time" will be left to the discretion of the individual coach.

  • Any individual exceptions to these attendance standards will be at the sole discretion of the Athletic Director after consultation with the coaching, counseling or administrative staff.

Revised and Effective March 1, 2005
