January 2008

To all Senior and their Parents:

As many of you know, the District revised the GPA conversion chart because it came to our attention that some colleges were not recalculating the students' grades. Consequently, the Guidance Office, in its effort to ensure that all students are being treated fairly in the application process, called all 240 colleges to which our students have applied asking them as to whether or not they recalculate the GPA, and if they did not, how they evaluate our students.

In order to ensure that our students are treated fairly, I reached out to all the schools below who do not recalculate the GPA and furnished them with a revised GPA based upon the new scale:

  • American University
  • Indiana University
  • SUNY Buffalo, University Center
  • SUNY Cortland
  • SUNY Oneonta
  • University of Colorado, Boulder
  • University of Maryland
  • University of North Carolina, Wilmington
  • University of Rhode Island

These schools have assured me that they will use the new GPAs in the evaluation process. I am very confident that my efforts with these colleges will only help our students in the college application process.

Many parents have questioned if their individual counselor should follow up with phone calls to these schools to ensure they are working with the right GPA. I have instructed the counselors not to do this as it will only serve to confuse the situation. I am now certain the issue has been addressed in a positive manner.

    Sincerely,

    Art Mandel
    Director of K-12 Guidance
