Professional Development Day Focuses
on District Initiatives

Workshops for Staff and Faculty Build Communities of Learners

NOVEMBER 8, 2007

School was closed for students on Election Day, but there were still classes throughout our schools as Roslyn's faculty and staff took part in Professional Development Day.

The topics of the day covered a number of district-wide initiatives, with members of the administration and faculty developing their own workshops and seminars which had professional value for their respective buildings and departments. Major areas of focus included the integration of technology into curriculum, differentiated instruction, literacy, and articulation between and among grade-level teachers.

Some examples: Secondary science teachers trained in the use of SmartBoards in the classroom; East Hills faculty held workshops on differentiated instruction; art and music teachers attended "The Balanced Mind" conference at C.W. Post; and kindergarten and grade 1 teachers at the Heights School worked on the concept of community building. Noninstructional staff also participated in workshops that were relevant to their respective professions.

The object of this and other professional development programs is to build communities of teacher-learners who work together, on an ongoing basis, toward shared goals that benefit all children.
