H E A L T H N O T I C E An Important Announcement from the Superintendent of Schools to Parents, Staff and Students Regarding Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) You have probably read or heard recently about a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that is resistant to antibiotics. This bacteria, known as methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is most often found in hospitalized patients. However, it has reportedly been diagnosed recently among student athletes in several high schools on Long Island. The primary way in which the infection is spread is through hand-to-hand contact. Therefore, personal hygiene is very important in preventing the infection. According to public health officials, careful hand washing is the single most effective way to control the spread of MRSA. In addition, athletes should bathe or shower directly after every practice or game. Athletic uniforms should be laundered daily. Sharing of personal items, such as towels or razors must be avoided. Athletic equipment should be cleaned between uses. Our physical education faculty and team coaches will continue to talk with student athletes about the infection and impress on them the seriousness with which it must be taken. Your cooperation in raising awareness about it and encouraging the practice of good personal hygiene are very important. In addition, we will continue to take special precautions to ensure the cleanliness of our locker rooms and other facilities. The literature linked below from the New York State Health Department provides additional information about MRSA. More information can be found on the website of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the New York State Department of Health. If you have any concerns about your child's health or your health, you should contact your health care provider. Feel free to contact me or our athletic director, Dr. Mira Martincich, if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. John A. Richman Superintendent More Information: |
